How Social Media has Changed Photography

Devin Allen, Rinzi Ruiz, Dixie Dixon and Joe McNally

Social Media // digital and the internet change everything // social media component of that, has become essential to the photographers voice in reaching a community.

print journalism receded supplanted by

  • digital / social media / electronic media / internet

social media strategy // marketing // gives us a voice

Can grow business through Facebook // insiders view to your world // tell stories // outlet for photographers // share vision – engagement

instagram // ever so often // street photography // niche // matters to have a community // niche – genre.

How does the way in which your audience reacts to your work dictates what you post, does the ways in which audiences have previously responded to your work, change the way you think about your photography. // unpredictability

( try to stay away from posting to post!! ) sometimes you just don’t get the responses you want. you can get more likes on an images that perhaps you didn’t work as hard for. which can be really frustrating!!

Pressures of social media. Does it become a burden? How do you feel about it? Do you feel the need be in the moment, if you immediately post a picture does it take you out of the moment?

fun of photography, no one given a passion to not share it // social media at platform to share. Do you feel like you have to post it. How much do you think about what you post. Only post when you feel something is really amazing. Is there an editing process

What I find interesting about this discussion is that all the photographers are coming from various perspectives about photography and social media.

We have one photographer, who uses social media as a method of reportage. Suggesting its not about likes, its about the news! getting the information, the story out there before the press!! about the truth. Whereas some others simply utilise the sharing tools to simply share a passion, and what there getting up to, a means to engage and connect with a community of other photographically focused people. Another suggested that he will only ever post images that are exceptional and there is an editing process to social media. And you simply shouldn’t post just to post images. There should be a thought process and system to the images.

I come from a perspective where i feel that social media is intended to be for connectivity and community. But we like one of the photographers suggested we make conscious decisions of what we post, due to audiences perception and response to what we post. And do we post images for ourselves or our audiences? What are we trying to accomplish by sharing our images?
